The German engineering firm Paul Woelfle has developed a rotary (Wankel) engine specifically suitable for use in go kart racing. It is a 300cc engine, developing 50hp, with a very low emission of only 3%. The lightweight motor – only 18kg – is an absolute sensation. It starts up immediately and comfortably revs to 10000rpm. The fact that it produces next to no vibration is always commented on favourably by drivers. The engine is equipped with a double disc centrifugal clutch, engaging the drive and engine at 3000rpm.
At MakoTrac the rotary motor is fitted to the Silver and Gold Star karts. The Silver Star is a reduced 27hp version, reaching a speed of 140km/h. The full-version Gold Star produces 50hp and reaches a speed of 160km/h. It has only recently set a lap record of 55 seconds around the 1345m main race track.
